Brief History of Department of Agricultural Marketing
In 1928, “Royal Commission on Agriculture” was established by British Government in Indian Sub-Continent to provide fair price to the farmers. In 1934, Agricultural Marketing Adviser was appointed and its head office was in New Delhi. Then in 1935, marketing staff were appointed in Provincial and Central level. In 1943, Marketing Department became permanent in undivided Bengal and the post Senior Marketing Officer was converted to Director of Agricultural Marketing.After Independence, in 1954, the Directorate of Agricultural Marketing was approved by the Government under the Agriculture, Co-operation and Relief Department of the Government of East Pakistan.In 1960, the Provincial Reorganization Committee approved giving the Directorate manpower at the divisional, district and sub-divisional levels. Department of Agricultural Marketing was known as Agricultural Market Directorate upto 1982. In 1982, Department of Agricultural Marketing was re-organized by Enam Committee and in 1983, it was named as “Department”.In 2015, the designation Director of the department was upgraded to Director General.
